Movies of 2009

Last year I decided that I would keep tabs on the amount of new movies I watched over the 12 months of 2009.   I guess this originally came from the idea that this blog (born in 2009) would play host to movie reviews as the year went on.  Some reviews were posted some were not, those that weren’t largely stayed in the background as the movie was too bland to warrant the effort of typing, or sometimes it was because I simply had something more interesting to blog about.

Bizarrely no post of mine has seen more visitors than the review I wrote for The International. Maybe there is a lack of blog reviews for it?

In total I watched 101 new movies, I didn’t bother keeping tabs on the ones I had watched before as it seemed a little pointless, all I would gain would be the disturbing truth as to how much time I spend engrossed in the world of silver screen. 2009 did see me do a few long haul flights (which would be unbearable without some kind of entertainment) and saw me stuck places miles away from home with nothing to do but watch DVDs.  For those reasons I think I will see less in 2010 but I’ll dutifully keep a list and let you know this time next year .

Top 5 of 2009 (in no particular order)

  1. Juno
  2. In Bruges
  3. Atonement
  4. Let the right one in
  5. Milk

Worst/most disappointing Movies of 2009

  1. Echelon Conspiracy
  2. Road trip beer pong
  3. Southland Tales
  4. Transformers: Revenge of the fallen
  5. Dirty Sanchez

Special mention as they were better than I thought they would be/solid movies;

  1. Marie Antoinette
  2. The Proposal
  3. Counterfeiters
  4. Forgetting Sarah Marshall
  5. Taken

5 Best coffee accompaniments

coffeeIn line with my semi regular Fantastic 5 on Friday I give you my take on the 5 most fantastic things to accompany your coffee.

Carrot cake.  Don’t think it counts as one of your 5 a day on the fruit and veg stakes but tasty and goes well with the java

Muffins.  Choc chip, blueberry or my own favorite raspberry and white chocolate,  any is good when hitting up the sugar rush between meals

The Oversized cookie.  Once upon a time the simple digestive was an institution to be dipped in a cup of tea, but with coffee shops there seems to be a veritable arms race for who can carry the largest cookie.  Expect pizza style sizes soon

Croissants.  Less choices than with muffins but plain, chocolate filled and my personally preferred option the almond filled are never better than when eaten with a latte.

Chocolate cake.  When enjoying the benefits of one type of bean, why not enjoy the antioxidant benefit of another, the cocoa bean!  Ok I may be clutching at straws for a reason by why not indulge

Runners up include biscotti as favored by many (just not me) or more coffee.  Go on it was a late night and you could do with the extra kick form an extra shot.

Any others that deserve a mention?

Fantastic 5 Friday

In a some what stolen idea I bring you ‘Fantastic 5 Friday’.

I was unsure whether to give a list of 5 fantastic nostalgic movies, reasons to be politically active, places of jaw dropping beauty but instead I give you…..

5 Fantastic desserts.  This is mainly because its lunch time and I’m hungry

  1. Sticky toffee pudding.  For those that have tried this dessert they know of its decedent awesomeness, best served with vanilla ice cream or fresh whipped cream (NOT canned)
  2. Apple crumble.  Is there any dessert that does ‘comfort food so well?
  3. Christmas pudding.  Not everyone’s idea of a great dessert but it it gets rolled out from kitchens once a year and despite everyone being stuffed beyond belief there stills seems to be room for this bad boy.  How many other desserts is it deemed acceptable to set on fire at the dinner table?
  4. Summer pudding.  Helping you hit your 5 a day with ease, chow down.
  5. Chocolate fudge cake.  It wouldn’t be a dessert list with out at least a little chocolate.

The runners up are Cherry pie as I have always loved it and lemon sorbet, a somewhat ‘cheat’ dessert but after a spicy meal it works well as a palate cleanser.

Any I should change?

Choc fudge

Movie page

In a blatant rip off of an idea I spotted on Gibbering giraffe’s blog I thought I would add a page with the list of movies I watch this year.

I like to put up a blog post about a movies sometimes (but not always) and figure that if someone is going to read my opinion who doesn’t know me then they can check out what else I have been watching.  I was going to do it with books too but at the moment I don’t read enough actually literature and as such the list would be embarrassingly short come January 2010.

If anyone has any recommendations, fire away!!
